LinkedIn shares some commonalities with other social media platforms. Like Facebook or Twitter, it allows for connection and networking on a global scale.
You can follow organizations, join groups, and share content that reflects your professional interests.
Differences from Other Social Media Platforms
LinkedIn stands out because it’s the only B2B platform.
However, unlike most social media, LinkedIn offers a more professional environment where the focus is on career advancement and business relationships.
Unlike platforms where personal lives often dominate, LinkedIn is tailored for professional growth, networking, and recruitment.
For nurses, this means:
Industry-Specific Networking Opportunities: A wealth of healthcare executives and recruiters frequent the platform, giving you endless professional networking opportunities.
Recruitment: You can connect directly with healthcare organizations looking for your specific expertise. Connect with thousands of healthcare recruiters from around the world.
Professional Development: Access to resources, webinars, and courses that can enhance your skills and knowledge.
Unlike other social media platforms, LinkedIn offers a built-in job board allowing you to apply to roles as you grow your network.
How LinkedIn Works
If you’re unfamiliar, your 1st connections are people you are directly connected to, having accepted each other’s connection requests.
2nd connections are the contacts of your 1st connections, meaning you share a mutual connection with them.
3rd connections are the connections of your 2nd connections, indicating a further degree of separation in your network.
How to Grow Your LinkedIn Profile
If you don’t have a LinkedIn account already, don’t worry. You can go to the LinkedIn website to create a free account. Once you’re logged in, you will be prompted to complete your profile.
The 2025 algorithm gives preference to 100% completed profiles, so don’t skip this step!
1. Choose the Right Profile Picture
One of the easiest ways to uplevel your profile is to include a professional-looking headshot. Seriously, no selfies!
Something to keep in mind: A headshot in scrubs or a lab coat may be appropriate. Or not, it’s up to you.
Your profile picture essentially works as your first impression while engaging on the platform.

2. Choose a Profile Banner

Your LinkedIn banner provides an opportunity to showcase your personal brand, highlight your industry, or convey your interests.
A well-chosen banner can make your profile more memorable and engaging, helping to attract connections and potential employers by reflecting your personality and career aspirations.
3. Create Your LinkedIn Headline

A LinkedIn headline can be up to 220 characters long.
Example Headline Formats:
- Current Role + Industry Keywords: “Registered Nurse | Telehealth Specialist | Patient Advocate”
- Skills and Aspirations: “Healthcare Administrator | Passionate About Patient-Centered Care | Seeking Remote Opportunities”
- Combination: “Marketing Manager | Digital Strategist | Helping Brands Grow Through Innovative Campaigns”
4. Write Your LinkedIn Bio

A LinkedIn bio is a concise overview of your professional background, skills, and aspirations, designed to showcase your personal brand to potential employers, colleagues, and connections.
It typically includes your current role, key achievements, areas of expertise, and what you’re looking for in your career.
The “about section” serves as an introduction that highlights your unique skill sets, helping others understand your professional identity and inviting them to connect with you.
Example Bio Framework
- Begin with a strong opening statement that introduces your current role and professional identity.
- Follow this by summarizing your professional background, highlighting key roles and significant achievements that showcase your skills.
- Next, outline your core skills and areas of expertise, using relevant industry keywords to enhance visibility.
- After that, share what drives you professionally, along with any personal values that guide your work.
- Finally, conclude with a call to action, inviting readers to connect or reach out for discussions or collaborations.
Example: “Registered nurse with over eight years of experience in acute care. Currently, seeking to transition into a remote healthcare role, focusing on telehealth and patient education.
Throughout my nursing career, I have developed strong skills in patient advocacy and effective communication, which are essential for delivering high-quality care in a virtual environment.
My background has allowed me the ability to connect with patients empathetically while using technology to enhance their healthcare experience.
I welcome connections and discussions about opportunities where I can contribute my nursing expertise in a new and impactful way.”
This summary clearly outlines your nursing background while highlighting your interest in remote work.
5. Be Social and Engage on the Platform
Now’s your chance to connect with and network with people on the platform who have the potential to advance your career.
Understanding Analytics
LinkedIn analytics is a set of tools provided by LinkedIn that allows users to track and analyze the performance of their profiles and posts.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Profile Views: Number of people who have viewed your profile over a specific period.
Post Engagement:
- Likes: Number of likes received on your posts.
- Comments: Number of comments on your posts.
- Shares: Number of times your posts have been shared.
Impressions: Total number of times your posts have been displayed in users’ feeds.
Clicks: Number of clicks on your posts or profile links.
Follower Demographics: Information about your followers, including their job titles, industries, and locations.
Connection Growth: Tracking changes in the number of connections over time.
Content Performance: Insights into which types of content (articles, videos, etc.) perform best.
Search Appearances: How many times your profile appeared in search results and the terms people used to find you.
Is LinkedIn Free to Use?
Yes, and I’ve used the free version over the past 4 years to grow my following on there. However, they do offer a premium version that starts around $30/month.
Creator Mode; Do I Need It?
Creator Mode on LinkedIn is a feature designed to help users grow their professional brand and reach a wider audience. When enabled, it transforms your profile into a more engaging platform for sharing content.
The benefits of enabling creator mode include:
More Visibility: By focusing on content creation, you can attract more followers and engage with a broader audience.
Increased Brand Awareness: It allows you to establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry by consistently sharing valuable insights and updates.
Additional Networking Opportunities: Engaging with your audience through content can lead to new connections and professional opportunities.
Changes to LinkedIn in 2025
Vanity metrics are out; real connection is in.
LinkedIn also seems to be rewarding spending time on the platform spent engaging with others’ content.
That means reading lengthy articles, commenting and adding meaningful discussion on the platform, and encouraging value-driven content.
Also, a keyword strategy is key for 2025. Be sure to incorporate them into every crevice of your profile. Hashtags are also super important!
LinkedIn Content Strategy for 2025
Stay on brand. Stick to your online persona to make this happen.
Do hashtag research and focus on a few at a time before trying others.
Connect with other Nurses, Doctors, Social Workers, etc. who are doing the same.
Be as social as possible. You won’t regret it!
